Although chesterfield sofas enjoy a reputation for class and sophistication, they are relatively hard to find in the media.

Perhaps the most famous chesterfield sofa is the one supposedly used by Sigmund Freud. Many experts believe that Freud used a chesterfield sofa to sit his patients down during hypnotherapy sessions. During the nineteenth century the chesterfield sofa became synonymous with psychiatry and hypnosis, and became a regular fixture in waiting rooms and treatment rooms of all kinds of doctors and therapists. There are also many different pieces of art, usually depicting nudes, sprawled across a chesterfield sofa, painted to fit in with the Freud reference.

In the book ‘A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy', the main character Arthur Dent and his acquaintance Ford use a time travelling chesterfield sofa, that drops them off in various locations throughout the space - time continuum.
Related Coverage
Chesterfield Lyons: Where does the term chesterfield come from?
Have a Royal Seat with Chesterfield Sofas
Chesterfield Lyons Feature Article: Why Buy from Us?
Chesterfield Sofa for You Home Beautiful
This sofa appears in part of the books, and radio series, although not in all versions.

In one famous scene, Arthur and Ford become sofas and are matching white and brown leather chesterfield sofas that speak using their cushions as mouths. Each is adorned with two small cushions, in the colours that the character was wearing, which give the sofa the shape of a face.

Many people believe that the television series ‘Friends' features a chesterfield sofa, however this is a myth and the sofa in central perk is a high backed sofa, whilst the ones in Monica's apartment are also high backed.

Visiting stately homes or taking guided tours of palaces or castles will very often result in seeing a chesterfield sofa in beautiful surroundings. However a hotel or bar will be just as likely to have a chesterfield, and many establishments design their interior to fit in with chesterfield sofas in order to attract a more discerning clientele, and to create an air of affluence. A trip to chesterfield itself may pay off for the keenest fans, however chesterfields can be found all over the world, in court buildings, wealthy homes, offices, waiting rooms, meeting rooms, coffee shops etc. You will never have far to go to find one.

There is a long specially built chesterfield sofa at Dunster Castle, a national trust property. Other properties will also feature specially constructed pieces, it is just a case of looking.

About Saxon Chesterfield Lyons

One of the largest manufacturers of leather furniture in the UK. With an extensive range of chesterfield sofas, leather sofas and leather armchairs in stock you will be sure to find something to suit your living room.

We have been building high-quality leather furniture here in the UK for over 20 years. One of our most popular choices is the Leather Chesterfield Sofa. This classic style is available in a variety of different colours and finishes.

Our leather furniture is not just popular in the UK, our leather Chesterfield Sofas have even been requested by hotels, offices and embassies from New York to Kuala Lumpur!

3 Vote(s)

The Little White Church On The Corner - Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2008, East Chesterfield Christian Church welcomes you. We are located 5 miles outside the town of Lyons, in a beautiful rural setting. Sunday worship is at 9:oo am.

Communion is held every Sunday. As is the custom of the Disciples of Christ, all who believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God whose death and resurrection gives us salvation from sin, are welcome to participate in the Lord's Supper.

East Chesterfield Christian Church - History
It all started in 1857 when L. L. Carpenter and James Hadsell held meetings in the Maple Grove Schoolhouse, then situated on the northwest corner of the Philip Roos farm in Chesterfield Township. At times the services were held in the barn of the Roos homestead. In the following year, April 1858 the church was organized.
The church at the onset was a strong one. There were 70 charter members. A few of the names were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Roos, George Roos, Mr. and Mrs. Levi Terry, Mrs. Sarah Wait Sheffield and her son Fred.

A meeting was called by Rev. J. C. Goodrich for the purpose of organizing a society to build a meeting house. Plyn Harden, James Onweller and J. P. Roos were appointed trustees, George Roos as treasurer. Seven years later in 1865 the house of worship was built.

J. H. Turner and Albert Deyo were carpenters, Jerry and George Sheffield, Charles H. Stutesman and Chester Whelch, who were small boys, helped to raise the building. A site had been purchased from William Onweller Sr. for $50. The deed was written December 17, 1864.

Turner and Deyo were to furnish a frame structure complete for $2300. Joseph Brown built it. The building was completed within contract time and was dedicated on December 21, 1865 as a house of worship.

East Chesterfield was the only church in Chesterfield Township at the time. It is the oldest active Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church and one of the oldest church buildings in Fulton County.

The church family has always been close and active. The Lord still has plans for this country church. The present members still have strong dedication and commitment in keeping our doors open. All are welcome.

6 Vote(s)

It was a socially awkward moment. Simon Eldridge was standing in a circle of friends at Christmas 2008 when someone made a funny remark. As he laughed, the contents of his mouth sprayed over the woman standing next to him.

Fortunately, it was only water, was easily dealt with and the party continued. But Eldridge stepped back in puzzled embarrassment.

He didn't know he was losing muscle power in his lips and that soon he would have difficulty holding them closed. Nor did he know this was an erratic early sign of an incurable disease that would put him in a wheelchair two years later.

At the time, Eldridge seemed indestructible. He was 44 and in his prime.

The financial markets were in a slump and, as managing director of Credit Suisse's Australian equities sales trading, he had been staying in Sydney while his wife Sheila and their two sons took their annual break at the family's holiday house in the Hunter Valley. He commuted on weekends.

When Sheila called him at work, his voice was intermittently slurred and she inquired if he had been to lunch. He hadn't. While she put it down to fatigue at the end of a tough year, he said it was odd and his tongue felt heavy.

Gradually, other things began happening. At night, Simon's left arm began to twitch and cramp. Was it the way he was lying? There were pins and needles in his hand. Thinking his wedding ring might be restricting blood flow, he took it off.

As other symptoms developed, they went to their family doctor, who referred them to a neurologist. By now Sheila had been exploring Google and had narrowed Simon's condition down to two possibilities; multiple sclerosis or motor neurone disease (MND). She kept this to herself.

In May 2009, when the neurologist said the situation was grave and they should get their affairs in order, Sheila went to water.

She knew what was next but didn't expect to hear that MND would disable Simon so quickly that he would be unable to work beyond Christmas. There was no cure and he would just grow weaker and weaker.

7 Vote(s)

It was under Rev. Black's leadership that the Winameg-East Chesterfield churches met with Dr. Harold Monroe regarding the formation of a parish.

It was under Rev. Black's leadership that the Winameg-East Chesterfield churches met with Dr. Harold Monroe regarding the formation of a parish. The committees from both churches met to make plans for the formation. The first parish service was started on March 20, 1966, with Rev. Black serving both churches.

Later that same year, a choir was organized which added so much to the service. The first parish cantata was presented at the Winameg Church on Sunday evening, December 18, 1966. Mrs. Wilda Collier from the East Chesterfield Church directed the combined choirs and Mrs. Christine Tappan was the accompanist.
The Christian Women's Fellowship was organized about 1967.

Up until 1969, the East Chesterfield congregation was paying rent to Winameg for their share of the use of the parsonage. On April 29, 1969 the parish council recommended to both church boards that a more modern united parsonage be purchased. The Gleason property located one half mile west of Winameg could be bought. It was voted on by ballot and carried by 75%.

On October 15, the two churches of the parish had incorporated so they could buy the Gleason property. Possession of the property occurred on December 15, 1969. After many years of use, the two churches decided to sell the parish. The parish was sold in summer 2010.

Throughout the years, the Winameg-East Chesterfield Parish has been served by faithful leaders. In December of 2008, Pastor Floyd Vincent answered the call to serve the two congregations. We praise God that he has sent Pastor Floyd and his wife, Connie to our parish.

Our churches form a unique relationship, two individual congregations and histories, yet one parish with one goal... to spread the news of our Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and Redeemer.
For almost 45 years, the parish has been touching the lives of people here in Fulton County and many other places near and far. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, following the leadership of our Lord Jesus Christ, the parish continues today to be involved in the ministry of being the church in today's world and society. Prayerfully, we go forward into the future knowing that God is not finished with us yet and that there is still much yet to do.

About the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

The Symbol
The red chalice bearing the "X" shaped cross of St. Andrew, which has come to be the symbol of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), was developed in 1969. The chalice symbolizes the centrality of the Lord's Supper as well as the cup of Christian self-giving for the world.
The St. Andrew's Cross, national cross of Scotland, focuses attention on the Scottish Presbyterian roots of the church. Thomas and Alexander Campbell both studied in Scotland and were Presbyterians, drawing many of their ideas from developments taking place in that country. St. Andew, too, has been identified with the laity and evangelism, prominent emphases of the Disciples over the years.

The Name
Since 1968 when the Provisional Design was accepted by the General Assembly, the name of the denomination has been Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) The compound name recognizes the historical coming together of two movements in 1832.
The "Christian Church" part of the name stems from the church's Kentucky ancestry and Barton W. Stone, whose followers dissolved their Presbyterian relationship in favor of a church less complicated, less dedicated to the use of creeds as tests of belief and more open to the reunion of Christians. Thomas and Alexander Campbell, whose movement to restore Christian unity developed similarly but separately in western Pennsylvania, rebelled against dogmatic sectarianism. Campbell chose "Disciples of Christ" because he felt it was less pretentious than "Christian Church."

6 Vote(s)

As Britain's original Chesterfield company...

This is a question we are often asked; the answer is we're not sure! We have customers the world over who have their own ideas; our Canadian customers like to think that Chesterfield is a Canadian word although they refer to any soa as a Chesterfield. We have done a little research and according to Robert Hendrickson in the Encyclopedia of word and phrase origins, the term chesterfield is commonly applied to a sofa in honour of Philip Stanhope, the forth Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773). However, Hendrickson points out that it is more likely that a latter Earl of Chesterfield invented them, which earl he does not know. At any rate, according to the OED (Oxford English Dictionary), it was used to refer to a couch in 1900.

According to Carver in American Regional Dialects the term appears to have come into use in Canada around 1903 and in Northern California about the same time. The Journal of the Canadian Linguistics Association notes chesterfield seems to be in general use throughout Canada, though the usual American sofa is also known and used . Almost everywhere in the U.S chesterfields are cigarettes and nothing more. Here in England, a davenport couch was sometimes referred to as a chesterfield but this is obsolete.

In present day England a Chesterfield is now generally accepted to mean a deep buttoned leather sofa with arms that are of the same height as the back of the couch.

Only the original chesterfield company makes chesterfields the old fashioned way, we don't cut corners and wherever possible use traditional methods in our factory.

We would like a definitive answer to the origins of the Chesterfield sofa, can you help?

If you have any ideas about the origins of the word 'Chesterfield' or if you have any interesting Chesterfield facts and we may give you a mention on the site.
Our Factory

Our factory only uses traditional methods to manufacture our fine leather furniture and all of our chesterfield sofas and chairs are made in the UK.

We have a comprehensive quality assurance process from initial order through to final delivery.
All stages throughout the manufacturing process are supervised by time served tradesmen and women with specialised knowledge of the individual skills involved in creating fine furniture.
Manufacture

We go to great lengths to make sure that all of our furniture not only looks good today but will still look good in years to come. All of our leather furniture is hand finished to the highest standard. Each spring is hand inserted into the seats and backs of our furniture with each spring working independently of the others. This ensures that our furniture keeps its form.
Leather

Only the finest quality leathers are used in the making of our furniture. All leather pieces are covered exclusively in select top grain leather procured from the finest tanneries. Unlike most of our competitors we do not use PU, splits or Bi-cast leather. These are passed off as the genuine article but are not suited to traditional Chesterfield furniture.

Real leather is a natural product. It breathes, is warm and has individual characteristics which make each hide unique. Leather will always bear the marks of its natural origin and these characteristics can show as healed scars, growth marks, areas of differing fibre density and hair pore structure. These hallmarks in no way detract from the wearing qualities of the leather. They are signs discerning owners cherish when buying leather. With the passing of time and use our leather develops a patina which enhances its beauty.

Every chesterfield sofa or chair we produce is totally unique due to the leather we use.
Most of compeitiors use a type of leather know as a "split" this is in essence re-constituted leather given an artificial top coat. At the Original Chesterfield Compnay we guarantee to only use the best UK sourced first class leather.
Frames

All our frames are constructed from hardwood,we use either English beech or English ash, which has been carefully dried, milled and processed to remove defects, which could cause structural weakness. All corners and structural stress points are reinforced with corner blocks that are firmly glued in place.

The construction of our frames as shown in the diagram gives an indication of the traditional methods our factory still uses.

Read more about Chesterfield Company by Chesterfield Field Lyons

3 Vote(s)

We prefer start-up companies as they offer excellent returns on growth with less risk than seed stage companies.
What We Look For
By targeting these companies we have achieved some excellent returns on our investments. Throughout the years startup and middle market companies have exceeded our expectations.

Occasionally we do invest in seed-stage companies who are looking for investments of up to $5 million if the company shows potential.

Industry Potential

In any investment we undertake, it is important that there is the right amount of investment potential. As a rule, we like to look at companies with mass market products, healthcare technology, green energy, patented technologies and IT solutions.

We like to see a strong board of directors and management team along with a strong brand. We examine the company to see what the potential is to take the company into a global market to become market leaders.

We look at the structure of the company and assess whether it can rapidly scale up to fulfill accelerated growth. If we feel there are weak spots in a corporation that is restraining its growth, we can then provide the skill and talent to help the company to achieve its potential.

Adding Value

We understand that to add value to a company we need to create tangible assets in which you can assign a value. In each company we partner with we undertake the following:

Operations - We help systematise operations to ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. We measure each stage of operations so the management team can identify weaknesses and act to ensure best operations performance. By doing this, we not only improve growth capacity but also form an operation that works in harmony.

New Markets - Some of the best growth opportunities are found by targeting new emerging markets. Asia has been and is one of the most important emerging markets today. Over the last decade, we have dedicated a division in our company just to build and form relationships in the Asian market. We have one of the strongest partnership networks in Asia. This is becoming one of the fastest growing areas in our company providing some exciting opportunities for our clients.

Partnership With Management

It is important that companies that we partner have a strong management team; this is the key to the success of all companies that we partner. When we partner a team we like to ensure that everyone involved have an interest in what the aims are, we do this by structuring equity reward schemes that represent the talent and responsibility of the management team member. The aim of offering equity in the company is to ensure that the management teams are focused and want success for the company.

We work with the CEO of each of our portfolio companies to decide the best equity distribution plan, it will be the CEO’s responsibility to execute the plan by allocating the equity among his team.

Process

Working with the CEO - We believe in working closely with the CEO of our portfolio companies, if needed we may even put one of our members into a company to assist the CEO. This will only happen if the CEO is busy and really needs help with any legal, banking, or negotiation issues.

It is important to understand that we are not there to undermine the CEO, it is just that sometimes the CEO can be busy with issues outside of the scope of his management team.

Due Diligence

Due diligence happens before any investment. This will involve an in-depth consultation with the CEO and his management team. We take a look at the current finances of the company along with all future projections. The time allowed for the due diligence process will depend on the company and the size of investment required.

1 Vote(s)
