(Reuters) – Electronic brokers for customized structured products are set to hit the Swiss market next year, allowing investors to get even better deals from banks.
“2012 will be the year in which metatools are first used,†said Christian Reuss, head of the derivatives exchange Scoach. In the past banks devised structured products and then marketed them to clients. Now, however, with just a mouse click client advisors can select a product’s maturity, currency and other features to create a made-to-order investment. In Switzerland at least seven banks are offering ‘design your own derivative’ solutions: Among them are Vontobel’s system Deritrade or UBS’s Equity Investor. Until now, clients had to compare offers by checking each banks’ platform. Yet that process is too cumbersome for many wealth managers, and independent firms such as Structuringlab are stepping into the gap to synchronies what is on offer. They are offering so-called “Metatools.†“We want to get our platform online in the next few weeks,†said Chief Executive Alain Bigar, whose six-person firm is focused on Switzerland for now but could expand its business to other countries easily. “In a first version professional investors can create tracker and barrier reverse convertibles and compare the offers of various issuers,†he said. A Hawaiian-based New Zealand businessman is eyeing opportunities here for investing in a flying school.
Michael Burgess has worked in finance in London, Geneva, Zurich, Dubai and New York. He’s here for the Rugby World Cup but is also exploring investment opportunities, including a flying school with Mauna Loa Helicopters, one of the biggest helicopter training schools in the United States, where he is the business development manager. Mr Burgess says many trainee pilots in the US come from other countries, particularly emerging economies such as India and China where there is a demand for aviation but no local flight programme. But he says there is a security concern around foreigners coming into the US to learn to fly, particularly after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Mr Burgess says they would like to expand to New Zealand in case the US rules change preventing foreign pilot students from studying there. He says at this stage they are trying to establish whether to set up a business from scratch, or to buy and develop an established business. Mr Burgess says setting up a school from scratch, including bringing training helicopters from the United States, would cost more than $3 million. Dynamic Wealth Advisors

SEOUL: The South Korean military side playing in the country’s top flight soccer league could be booted out next season as the fallout from an embarrassingmatch-fixing scandal continues.
Sangmu Phoenix is made up of professional players doing their mandatory two years of military service and several have been caught up in the K-Leaguematch-fixing probe. The team’s coach was arrested this week for allegedly accepting money from the parents of a player to keep quiet about their son’s role in the corruption scandal. “We’re considering leaving Sangmu off the K-League next season,†an official from the military’s athletics division said on Wednesday. “But we’re not looking into forcing Sangmu to stop accepting professional athletes altogether.†South Korea’s government has already threatened to shut down the 16-team league unless it cleans up its act. The K-League took a cautious approach to Sangmu’s future, saying: “We’re not yet at a point where we have to come up with (such punitive) measures.†The most damaging crisis to hit the professional K-League since it was launched in 1983 deepened last week when 46 players were arrested in relation to the attempted fixing of 15 matches from June to October last year. Prosecutors have also charged 11 brokers, including several former players, ... Dynamic Wealth Management Headlines: John Boehner Says Republicans Must ‘Sacrifice’ to Avoid Default

The speaker would increase the debt ceiling by a trillion dollars and cut spending by a trillion dollars. That is a short-term fix that would allow the country to borrow money and pay its bills through January.
During that period Boehner’s plan calls for the appointment of a 12-member Congressional Commission to come up with an additional $3 trillion in cuts and revenue increases through tax reform. What is unclear is whether Congress would be forced to vote to raise the debt ceiling again. “We can’t adopt an approach that leaves the threat of default hanging over the country for another six months or so,†Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said today on ABC’s “This Week.†“That would be deeply irresponsible to do, and we do not think that’s an acceptable burden to put on the American economy,†he said. The president has threatened a veto of any bill that does not extend the debt ceiling beyond the 2012 elections. The United States will run out of borrowing authority on Aug. 2, and members of Congress know they must start moving legislation now to pass a debt ceiling extension in time and avoid the possibility of defaulting on bonds. While Boehner works his plan, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is working on another short-term solution that would probably give the president the ability to raise the debt limit.... Madrid – International tourism grew by almost 5% in the first half of the year, recording a record 440 million arrivals, the UN’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) said on Thursday.
The results show that “in spite of multiple challenges, international tourism continues to consolidate the return to growth initiated in 2010,†the UN body said in its report. “Between January and June of this year, the total number of arrivals reached 440 million, 19 million more than in the same period of 2010,†the body said from its Madrid headquarters. The rise of almost 5% in international tourism over the period set “a new record of 440 million arrivals,†the tourism organisation reported. The emerging economies are the motor for this rise of the sector from the economic crisis which scarred all sectors in 2008. These nations saw a 4.8% growth in their international tourism sectors. Sound performance The Middle East posted an 11% drop in the sector, while North Africa was down 13% after the “Arab spring†of popular uprisings hit the tourist sector hard. Over the same six-month period sub-Saharan Africa continued to perform “soundly,†showing a rise of 9%, the World Tourism Organisation said. Asia and the Pacific grew at a comparatively slower pace of 5%, but this came after bumper 13% growth last year,... « previous next » |
